The French explorer La Perouse arrived at Botany Bay in 1788 about the time Captain Phillip decided to leave. La Perouse sailed on after six weeks and was never heard from again. His mysterious fate was of great concern to the French. It is reported that Louis XVI said, as he was about to be guillotined, "At least is there any news of Monsieur de La Perouse?" |
