Jaipur's most famous landmark, the Hawa Mahal, or Palace of Winds. The building is wide and tall but no more than one room deep, and is faced on the street side with 593 stone screens. The women of the court, who lived in a strict state of purdah, could sit in the rooms and watch the street life below without themselves being seen. |
